Web Development

VSI-thinking has been developing web sites since the inception of the commercial web in the UK. An early pioneer in database driven web sites, VSI-thinking produced one of the first used car web sites, CarWorld, two years before Autotrader.

Modules

Our approach to web development has been to package our service into a number of distinct modules of functionality. This makes understanding the proposition and choosing the right solution far easier for our clients. This has been a hugely successful approach for VSI-thinking with many clients choosing a few modules at first and then continuing the development of their site with additional modules as traffic and business permit.

Databases

Our wider ranging expertise in database development extends across MS SQL, MySQL, Access, Oracle and xBase. We provide a range of systems, including product catalogues, work dictionaries, shopping baskets and business information services. Our web-based database applications can be accessed from any browser on a computer, PDA or mobile phone.

Standards

Our websites are written to conform to the W3C standards, accessibility and guidelines for CSS, HTML, ECMA/JavaScript and XHTML, meaning that they are robust and easily interpreted by any browser. Our back-end systems are equally painstakingly designed and built using object oriented design processes. We use technologies and approaches including UML (Unified Modelling Language), Top-Down design, Rapid Prototyping, and Object-Oriented Analysis. On particularly demanding projects, we occasionally adopt a variant on the XP (Extreme Programming) technique of two programmers per machine.

Testing

The testing schedule for the web site will include; browsers, platforms, live site and test cases. Through the development cycle the web site will be tested on the PC and Mac browsers including; IE 6.0, IE 7.0, Firefox, Opera, Netscape, Safari. A test case document will be prepared to test functionality and record the outcome of those tests. This process, part of the VSI-thinking development, will be provided to the client for their own acceptance testing. The development web site is published on a live test URLfor soak testing the site before going live. Following the hand over of the web site, VSI-thinking will continue to support the document controlled acceptance testing.
